Farne Islands Trip

A few people have asked about a repeat Farne Islands trip this year, so I am suggesting the date of Thursday 29th May. We would take the 'All day bird watch' trip by Billy Shiels - the boat leaves Seahouses around 10, so we need quite an early start from Teesside. It visits both Inner Farne and Staple Island, returning about 4.00.

The cost would be £35 per person, plus £6.80 landing fee on each island - unless you are a National Trust member, when the landing is free.

We would share cars / petrol money to get there. If you are interested, and didn't put your name down on the list at the AGM, please let me know by email as soon as possible so I can get an idea of numbers.

SPS Visit to York PS

On Wednesday 30th April, seven members of SPS will travel to York Photographic Society in the return visit of the SPS/YPS exchange.  York PS extends a warm welcome to Stokesley PS members who wish to visit York PS in support.  York PS meets at the Poppleton Centre, Main Street, Upper Poppleton, YO26 6JT at 7:30 pm.  It is easy to get there and does not involve driving into York.  Car parking is available at the centre, but car sharing would be a good idea.  Please note that the post code is not exact.  To see the exact spot, use Google Maps and type in The Poppleton Centre.

Upcoming Events at Rheged

Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition – until 18 May

Organised in partnership with the BBC Wildlife Magazine and the Natural History Museum London, The Wildlife Photographer of the Year is the most well-renowned and longest running wildlife photography competition in the world. Each year tens of thousands of professional and amateur photographers submit their work to the competition. The best 100 are picked by a panel of judges made up of the best photographers in the business. The exhibition is split into 18 categories, including awards for children and young people, the environment and animal portraits.

The exhibition is running now until Sunday 18th May and is located in the gallery on the top floor, and it’s open every day from 10.30am-4.30pm, admission to the exhibition is £2.00, and kids under 8 go Free .

Weekend Mountain Photography Exhibition – 10-11 May

In conjunction with the UK premiere of Terry Abraham's film “Life of a Mountain - Scafell Pike” on Saturday 10th May, Rheged has teamed up with Tim Parkin from On Landscape to host a weekend exhibition on 10-11 May 2014 celebrating the variety and beauty of Mountain Photography. The exhibition will show work from some of the region's leading Landscape Photographers such as Joe Cornish, Terry Abraham, Roy Fleming, Colin Bell and Tony Simpkins alongside lectures and workshops from Angie and David Unsworth and Mark Littlejohn. Additionally we have an excellent photography lecture coming up on the same weekend - Angie and David Unsworth are traditional film photographers working in the English Lake District. They make contemporary photographs with 10x8 and 5x4 large format field cameras from their Grasmere studio. Their lecture, which is more akin to a photographic story, expands on the theme of Terry Abraham's ‘Life of a Mountain, Scafell Pike,’ responding to the mountain as a landscape of personal pilgrimage. There are three RPS events coming up soon that will interest club members who are thinking about, or committed to going for their RPS Distinctions.

The Dark Skies of the North Pennines - A Photographer's Delight

Graham Relf FRAS is a member of Tynemouth Photographic Society.

"Over the past few years I have been amazed by what I can photograph in a clear night sky with my Canon camera and very little additional equipment (away from light polluted areas). So much so that I have written a book about it. I am keen to encourage others to have a go and to experience similar amazement. Today's digital cameras enable amateurs to do things which required professional equipment only a few years ago.
The book contains more than 50 of my own images, mostly in colour, with a gentle introduction to the astronomy behind each one. The last part of the book goes into techniques for photographers but it aims to be less technical than most books on astrophotography. I have self-published the book through York Publishing Services (YPS) in order to keep the selling price as low as possible."

Getting Started with Lightroom

As mentioned at the SPS meeting yesterday I am willing to help our club members get started with Lightroom.  In particular covering Setting Lightroom Up, Using the Catalogue Correctly, Keywording and Metadata, Making Useful Presets for Resizing Images, Printing Presets with Profiles etc.  I am also happy to explain how to use the RAW Processor. 

This would take place during the period from the beginning of May to the end of August.  Please get in touch if you are interested.

Congratulations to two of our members for their results in recent competitions:

David Smith was awarded Best Botanical in the PAGB GB Cup Nature Section with Polytrichum Moss Capsules and in the RHS Garden Photographer of the Year competition Peloric Foxglove by John Hopkins won third prize in the Details category.

Results - Some good, some not so good

This weekend the judging took place on both the NCPF Championships and the PAGB Cup.

At the Championships we didn't do very well in the PDI competition with a final score of 209 out of a possible 300. Northallerton were the outright winners with a score of 243 with Morpeth in second place. Northallerton CC and Morpeth CC will represent the NCPF at the PAGB PDI Championships in July.

Stokesley fared a lot better in the Print competition with 221 points putting us into 2nd place behind Sunderland who scored 230. So Stokesley PS will be representing the NCPF at the PAGB Print Championships which are held in October. To this end we will be asking for your very best prints at the beginning of next season.

In the GB Cup Stokesley PS did very well in the Nature section coming in 27th equal place (out of 94 competing clubs) with a score of 112 out of a possible 150. Although we entered 20 images only the top 10 marks count in this competition. The winners were Wigan 10 with a score of 129. Our results in the Open competition were not nearly so good where we scored 138 points out of a possible 225. We were in 100th equal place out of 110 competing clubs. 15 images are entered for this competition and the scores all count towards the total. Again Wigan 10 were the winners with 186 points.

For all of these competitions each image is marked out of 15 by 3 judges each scoring from 2 to 5.

For those of you that mourn the loss of Ilford Gallerie paper, because of the closure of the Ilford Switzerland plant, Permajet have just announced a new paper called Smooth Pearl.  At the moment it is possible to request a free A4 sample pack via the Permajet website.

Message from John Devlin:

Our model Sammy is semi-pro, very pretty and very experienced and will enable your members to get great shots!

So what we plan is:
Explain the lights, their set-up and how to meter etc.
We will put Sammy through some posing techniques and show the difference between working with a model and
someone who just wants a photograph taking.
Hands on for your members so encouragement to bring camera's etc is a must.
Brian and I will be on hand through-out for anyone who may want to ask questions or has any problems.

It will be a good night and those taking pictures will have no excuses in not getting pictures!

RHS Photographic Competition closes 1st November

With the closing date for this year's RHS Photographic Competition fast approaching, we're having one last push to remind photographers to get their entries in before Friday 1st November to be in with a chance of winning the coveted title of RHS Photographer of the Year 2013 and the top prize of £1000. The standard of entries for this year is already high, but we're keen to make sure that no budding entrants are left behind, so we very much hope that you will pass this message on to your members.

According to judge and professional garden photographer Clive Nichols,'shooting at dawn in the autumn is the perfect time to take pictures outdoors as flowers and foliage will still be decorated with dew and cobwebs which can make for some striking images.'  Now that we are in the midst of autumn it's the perfect time to get outside and capture some truly spectacular shots.

An Exhibition in Leyburn

Exhibitions at Nunnington Hall

There is an exhibition of photographs by Steve McCurry at Nunnington Hall until 3rd November.  Following that the British Wildlife Photography will be on from 9th November to 15th December.  If you are a National Trust member entry is free but you will need to pay the normal entrance fee if not.

Nunnington Hall is open every day except Mondays until 3rd November.  For the remainder of November until 15th December the Hall is only open on Saturdays and Sundays.  Here's the link.

Winlaton Camera Club are soon to be hosting a talk with on the the UK's leading landscape / wilderness photographers.



Colin is not only a respected photographer best known for his panoramic images especially of his native Scotland, but is also a committed conservationist.

During 'A Photographer's Life' Colin will take a retrospective look at his life as a photographer.
