I’m writing, on behalf of Ripon City Photographic Society, to invite the members of your organisation to visit our Society’s Photographic Exhibition at the Curzon Cinema in Ripon. The Exhibition, which will be in the upstairs Studio at the cinema, will be open during cinema hours from Tuesday 10th February through to Sunday 22nd February.

On display will be around 40 prints and 60 digital images showing the wide range of our members’ interests and photographic skills. We hope you will be able to visit our event and look forward to meeting you and sharing with you, through our exhibition, our mutual interest in photography.

Alongside your visit to our exhibition, why not take a walk around Ripon? Though it is one of the country’s smallest cities, Ripon offers the photographer a wealth of photo opportunities. From our beautiful Cathedral to the historic Workhouse, Prison and Courthouse Museums and the many and varied architectural styles of the buildings in and around the Market Square, there is a picture at every turn.

Ripon has many links with Lewis Carroll some of which are captured in the carved figures of the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ characters in the delightful Spa Gardens.
Alternatively, you may wish to include in your visit an afternoon or evening showing of a film. The Curzon, our new ‘state-of-the-art’ two-screen cinema, shows the latest in mainstream, independent and family films from around the world as well as events such as the New York Metropolitan Opera and National Theatre Live.
The location of the Curzon Cinema is 74-75 North Street, Ripon, HG4 1DP. Films scheduled for showing during the period of our exhibition are ‘Kingsman’, ’Selma’, ’50 Shades of Grey’ (a film about black and white photography, perhaps?) and ‘Sean the Sheep’ for half term week. Though some car parking is available in the Market Square, two larger car parks are sited off Marshall Way and at the junction of Moss’ Arcade and Victoria Grove. All are council operated and are pay and display.

Exhibition at Kirkleatham Hall

Nunnington Hall and Rievaulx Terrace are holding an exhibition of the winners of the two most recent International Garden Photographer of the Year competition from Saturday 14th February - Sunday 22nd March. We are the only confirmed venue in the North of England holding this exhibition and it will be opening in Kew Gardens in London at the same time.
In conjunction with this exhibition, internationally renowned photographer Phillip Smith, will be delivering a workshop entitled ‘Better Plant and Garden Photography’ on Saturday 14th March from 10.00 – 16.00 at Nunnington Hall. This is a rare opportunity to work with a talented photographer and pick up new skills in the beautiful surroundings of Nunnington Hall.

Course details
The workshop welcomes photographers of all levels and no specific level of expertise or previous experience is expected. The aim of the course is to provide you with a set of skills and techniques that you can use to improve your photography of plants and gardens no matter what type of equipment you use. You don’t need the latest expensive cameras – all levels are welcome.
The workshop is run by Philip Smith, professional photographer and Founder of International Garden Photographer of the year in association with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. His work appears in books and magazines worldwide.
There will be an emphasis on training the eye to see photographic opportunities, as well as ideas and techniques to enable you to make the most of the locations. The course will be a mix of lecture, practical work, and group discussion.
The lecture will consist of a talk by Philip Smith accompanied by images of his and other photographers’ work to illustrate key points. The aim is to give you a sound basis for developing your techniques later in the day. Topics covered will include macro, composition, depth of field, focus, priority modes, control of light, and light and colour. An overview of digital processing will also be given.
The practical work will involve work in the garden. You will pursue your own subjects and interest, in addition to undertaking projects suggested by Philip. There will be ample opportunities for one to one discussions with Philip about any aspect of your photography.
The afternoon will involve a group discussion about the work that students have undertaken during the course, with constructive and inspiring comments about the work on show by both tutor and fellow students.
You will get more out of the course if you have a camera with interchangeable lenses, and particularly if you have a macro lens. This applies both to DSLR and smaller compact system cameras. Extension tubes used with normal lenses are also useful and suitable for this kind of photography. You should bring a stable tripod if you can, a remote shutter release and lens hood. Bring your camera’s manual if you have been struggling with its controls. You will need plenty of media cards and a fully charged battery (or two!) for your camera.
The course is about exploration and moving out of your comfort zone to take great pictures. But it is not deadly serious nor is it a course about the latest technology. In a friendly, open environment, we aim to inspire you to get more pleasure and fun from your photography for years to come

Inner Landscapes, Wilder Shores

An exhibition of photography by Garry Brannigan

Garry Brannigan’s fourth exhibition at The Station sets out to reveal an intrinsic beauty within Northern Britain’s upland landscape through 33 new photographs made during 2013 and 2014.
Garry is one of the country’s most popular instructors in the art of landscape photography and his exhibition “Inner Landscapes, Wilder Shores” features photographs made in Swaledale, Northumberland, Borrowdale, the Isle of Skye, and also Glen Torridon and Inverpolly in the North West Highlands of Scotland and Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides.
In each photograph prominence is given to the subject ahead of the photographic process, while at the same time exploring a fascinating paradox…it is often a photographer’s vision, expressed through composition and technique, which brings an aesthetic to the picture and enables the viewer to then appreciate the unique qualities of the subject.
The exhibition runs until January 8 and The Station Gallery is open every day from 9am to 10.30pm (except Christmas Day). Entry is free.

RPS Biennial Exhibition

Congratulations to SPS member, Rob Louw, whose image Two Zebras Bite the Dust has been selected for the 2015 RPS Members’ Biennial Exhibition, which will tour the UK during 2015.

Only 100 images have been selected for the exhibition from 3284 images submitted worldwide, so it is indeed a great achievement.

Exhibition at Whickham

An Invitation from Ripon PS

On behalf of Ripon City Photographic Society I am delighted to invite your members together with family and friends to visit our Annual Photography Exhibition on Saturday, 16th August at Allhallowgate Methodist Church, Victoria Grove, Ripon, HG4 1LG. The exhibition is open from 9.30am to 4pm with an official opening by The Right Worshipful, the Mayor of Ripon, Councillor Mick Stanley at 10am.  Members’ work in print, digital and other formats will be on view. Admission is free but there will be an opportunity for a voluntary retiring donation. You can vote for your favourite print, digital image or 'other media' in the display and one lucky winner will be drawn from all entries at our first meeting of the season and be able to select a print of their choice. In addition there will be home-made cakes and drinks available so you can rest, relax and chat.

The one-level venue is accessible to all and is opposite the bus station in the centre of Ripon. There are pay and display car parks next to and almost opposite the church near to Sainsbury’s Supermarket. 

Don't just come for the exhibition though – Ripon and its environs offer a wonderful variety of photo opportunities. The city is unique in having a fabulous Law and Order Trail with the Old Workhouse, the Old Court House and the Police and Prison Museum within a few minutes walking distance of the exhibition venue. Artefacts and architecture abound. We have further great architecture in and around the City centre and also at the Edwardian Spa Baths next to the Spa Park Gardens. Here there is a multi-trunked tree that has been reduced in height, with each trunk being sculpted into a character from Alice in Wonderland. If you still want more food or drink after sampling our fare in the exhibition, we have some great independent coffee shops - Oliver's Pantry and Chinereys to name just two, plus some of the more well-known high street names. Not for nothing is Ripon known as Yorkshire's 'Garden Racecourse' and if you want to experience or photograph the Sport of Kings a programme of racing is scheduled from early afternoon on the 16th. Further afield there is Fountains Abbey (free to National Trust members) and Newby Hall and Gardens (free to members of the Historic Houses Association). If you decide, as our city signs suggest, one should, ‘stay awhile amidst its ancient charms’ you can witness the Ripon Hornblower performing the setting of the watch at 9pm. He blows his horn on the four corners of the obelisk on the Market Square, thus assuring residents of their safety, a tradition that has gone on, unbroken, since 866!

The prints will be exhibited at Blackfriars Priory, Gloucester in July.

Exhibition at the Palace Hub Gallery, Redcar

This exhibition closes on 24th November. The gallery looks worth a visit. I notice that they offer 15% off their printing and scanning services to local camera club members on production of evidence that they are a member of a club (e.g. Programmer Booklet). See their website.

An Exhibition in Leyburn

Exhibitions at Nunnington Hall

There is an exhibition of photographs by Steve McCurry at Nunnington Hall until 3rd November.  Following that the British Wildlife Photography will be on from 9th November to 15th December.  If you are a National Trust member entry is free but you will need to pay the normal entrance fee if not.

Nunnington Hall is open every day except Mondays until 3rd November.  For the remainder of November until 15th December the Hall is only open on Saturdays and Sundays.  Here's the link.

International Exhibition Success

Congratulations to Guy Davies, our Syllabus Secretary, who gained two awards with his entry into the NCPF International Exhibition. 'Out of Season' was awarded an RPS Ribbon in the Monochrome Prints Section and 'Bone Setter, Morroco' gained an NCPF Ribbon in the PDI Travel Section.

Hebridean ~ a photographic celebration of the Hebrides

Following Guy Davies success on being awarded the Northumbria Trophy for the best mono print from an NCPF club member, Paula has been awarded the Northumbria Trophy for the best image from an NCPF club member in the Travel section for Projected Digital Images with Palouse Tree.

This means that 2 out of a possible 5 Northumbria Trophies this year have been awarded to SPS members.
