Chris Martin will be visiting the Captain Cook Memorial Museum,
Whitby, on Saturday 19th September, to show his work and to talk about his experiences ‘getting to
know’ wild animals in Africa and how he tries to capture what they
really are.
He will also give his views and reactions to our special exhibition –
a portrait of a Kangaroo by George Stubbs, on loan from the National
Maritime Museum.

A message from Steve & Ann Toon
Dear Photographer,
We're just sending round an email to advise of a new photo event we've arranged for next November: the Winter Wildlife Weekend at Caerlaverock Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust reserve, on the north shore of the Solway Firth in south west Scotland. The reserve is less than an hour's drive from Carlisle and the M6.
This is a two night residential weekend, with accommodation in the farmhouse at the heart of the reserve, on the nights of Friday 27 and Saturday 28th November. All meals and refreshments are included in the price of £165 per photographer. We've aimed to make this an affordable break. The farmhouse is recently refurbished, and while accommodation is simple and homely, it's cosy and comfortable and makes a great base for photography. Because we're staying on the reserve we can be out at first light, hours before the public have access.
Caerlaverock is famous for it's huge flocks of overwintering barnacle geese, but also has a wide variety of other water birds, including beautiful whooper swans. There are plenty of hides for photography, including a very comfortable heated hide only yards from the farmhouse. Roe deer and foxes are often seen on the reserve, and as a special treat we're almost certain to be visited each night by badgers, which feed outside the conservatory window.
It's more of a pre-Christmas get-together for like-minded people who enjoy wildlife and photography, than a formal teaching event, but we will have a short tutorial during non-photographing hours, and there will be plenty of opportunity to chat to us for advice, or to show us your pictures for critiques.
Single guests will be sharing a room (though we won't mix genders!), allowing us not to charge a single supplement. Some rooms are en suite, others share a bathroom: en suites will be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis, so book early!

North East Wildlife Competition Success
Congratulations to club member Paul Forster's daughter, Lauren, on her success in the The North East Wildlife Competition 2014.
Each Person could enter six photographs only in any of the six categories . This year had a total of 1,289 entries which then was short listed to One Hundred .
All Photographs had to be taken in the North East and include information regarding Species, date and location.
Lauren had five short listed photographs. She came second place with her image of a mating pair of Common Blue Butterflies taken in July 2013 at Coatham Marsh,
For this she received a £100.00 pair of Opticron 8x30 binoculars.
The Award ceremony took Place at the Hancock Museum on Thursday 3rd July . Lauren's winning image is shown below.

Upcoming Events at Rheged
Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition – until 18 May
Organised in partnership with the BBC Wildlife Magazine and the Natural History Museum London, The Wildlife Photographer of the Year is the most well-renowned and longest running wildlife photography competition in the world. Each year tens of thousands of professional and amateur photographers submit their work to the competition. The best 100 are picked by a panel of judges made up of the best photographers in the business. The exhibition is split into 18 categories, including awards for children and young people, the environment and animal portraits.
The exhibition is running now until Sunday 18th May and is located in the gallery on the top floor, and it’s open every day from 10.30am-4.30pm, admission to the exhibition is £2.00, and kids under 8 go Free .
Weekend Mountain Photography Exhibition – 10-11 May
In conjunction with the UK premiere of Terry Abraham's film “Life of a Mountain - Scafell Pike” on Saturday 10th May, Rheged has teamed up with Tim Parkin from On Landscape to host a weekend exhibition on 10-11 May 2014 celebrating the variety and beauty of Mountain Photography. The exhibition will show work from some of the region's leading Landscape Photographers such as Joe Cornish, Terry Abraham, Roy Fleming, Colin Bell and Tony Simpkins alongside lectures and workshops from Angie and David Unsworth and Mark Littlejohn. Additionally we have an excellent photography lecture coming up on the same weekend - Angie and David Unsworth are traditional film photographers working in the English Lake District. They make contemporary photographs with 10x8 and 5x4 large format field cameras from their Grasmere studio. Their lecture, which is more akin to a photographic story, expands on the theme of Terry Abraham's ‘Life of a Mountain, Scafell Pike,’ responding to the mountain as a landscape of personal pilgrimage. Booking is essential.

Finally, As part of the Mountain Photography Exhibition at Rheged, Photographer Mark Littlejohn will be doing a workshop based at Ullswater Steamers. During the 4 hour workshop, photographers will get the chance to cruise around Ullswater on an iconic steamer, giving them the opportunity to capture breath-taking scenery from angles not accessible by land.
