Monochrome North - a photography exhibition by Neil Bage

Neil was born in County Durham, spending most of his childhood
and youth outdoors, where he developed an interest in drawing.
Photography was a natural progression, and Neil quickly established a
preference for black and white landscapes and seascapes, taking
inspiration from the beautiful scenery of the local area.

NCPF Website Update

1.      International Salon/33rd Salon 2012
The new page for the 2012 salon has been linked up, and the entry for the Prints sections is now active.
The PDI sections will go live towards the end of this month. In respect of members of NCPF Clubs only, an exception has been made to the “unmounted” rule. Provided the entrant takes responsibility for delivering the prints to Jane Black’s home address and collecting them there afterwards then mounted prints will be allowed from NCPF entrants.

Congratulations to Mike Walker

Some SPS members may be aware that over the last four years Mike Walker has been studying, part time, for a degree in Commercial Photography at Cleveland College of Art and Design, Hartlepool Campus and hence his very limited attendance at club meetings. The degree, which is accredited by The University of Teesside has now been successfully completed.
At the end of each graduation year, the college and students put on a Degree Show to showcase and promote their work.  This year is no exception with the ‘Summer Creative 2012’ show that commenced with an invitation only opening evening on Thursday 7th June 2012.

There is lots of great art work to see throughout the campus and Hartlepool Art Gallery, not all photographic, and all professionally presented and if you are interested Mike would recommend a visit.

The event takes place at Church Square, Hartlepool, TS24 7EX and is open to the public daily at the following times:

Friday 8th June – Saturday 9th June 10AM – 4PM
Monday 11th June – Wednesday 13th June: 10AM – 8PM
Thursday 14th June – Saturday 16th June 10AM – 4PM

NCPF Website Update

“The Gallery of Trophy Winners” from the 2012 NCPF Annual Competitions has now been uploaded.  I have left the 2011 gallery on-line for the time being, so both can be viewed.
My thanks to all those who assisted in any way towards its completion.  The fully detailed results are not yet available, but are being prepared and, although it may take anything from one to two weeks, please remember that there is an considerable amount of work involved on the part of the current ‘ad hoc’ sub-committee.

Summer Outings - Update


First outing is next Thursday, 24th May - Wainstones / Hasty Bank. Meet where Cleveland Way crosses the Chop Gate road at top of Clay Bank at 7 pm, and be prepared for a bit of a climb!

New addition - Keith Watson has arranged the Tees river trip as discussed at the AGM, for Friday 6th July.

Flowers under Water

When we were away last week in the Eden Valley we took a look at the International Garden Photographer of the Year exhibition which was on in Reghed.  There were some interesting pictures of flowers which had been put under water and left to degrade so today I plunged this tulip under water.  It will  be interesting to see how it looks in a few weeks' time.

NCPF Annual Competition Results

Stokesley PS came equal 3rd in the Stan Bewick Trophy for the Best Club Entry in Colour Prints.


In the Federation Challenge Trophy for Monochrome Prints Paula Davies gained 2nd place in the
Best Individual Entry with Langdale Tree.

Supermoon on Saturday

There will be a 'supermoon' this Saturday, 5th May.

Apparently the full moon actually rises around 7:20 pm on Saturday 5th May with sunset approx 8:48pm. So, Huntcliffe should have some nice light on it from the setting sun, and the tide will be on its way out.  For more about supermoons click here.

International Garden Photographer of the Year Exhibition

The 5th annual International Garden Photographer of the Year exhibition has just opened at the Rheged Centre, Penrith.  The exhibition is housed in the Gallery at Rheged, where they show one photographic exhibition each year (last year they showed the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition).

The exhibition brings together photographs from internationally renowned professionals and home-grown amateur photographers alike.  

This year's entries are both creatively and technically highly accomplished, making for astonishingly beautiful photographs.

The exhibition is open daily from 10.30 am – 4.30 pm and runs until Sunday 1 July. Admission is normally £2 but they have a special group rate for groups of more than 10, when paid altogether admission is just £1.25 each. This can be booked in advance or paid on arrival.

Cotswold Monochrome Salon of Photography

You are cordially invited to take part in the 17th National Monochrome Exhibition, the Cotswold Salon 2012 which is held with patronage of the PAGB (17/2012) and as part of the British Photographic Exhibition awards scheme.

There are two categories,'Silver Print' and 'Digital Print' each with the same three monochrome classes:

'Scapes' - landscapes, seascapes, city scapes - or any other 'scape'

'People' - any photo where the main subject is a person or people

'Other' - any subject not catered for above

BT and Virgin Media Customers Please Read

This was sent by a friend of a club member and it is not a scam e-mail. 


"I received a phone call from BT, informing me that he was disconnecting me because of an unpaid bill.. He demanded payment immediately of £31.00 or it would be £ 118.00 to re-connect at a later date. The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with Virgin Media, allegedly VM have to pay BT a percentage for line rental! I asked the guy's name - he gave me the very 'English' John Peacock with a very 'African' accent & phone number 0800 0800 152. Obviously the fellow realized I didn't believe his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up & try phoning someone - he would dis-connect my phone to prevent this. AND HE DID !! My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing - until he phoned me again. 


Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT. I asked how the payment was to be made & he said credit card, there & then. I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him, I didn't believe his name or that he worked for BT. He hung up. I dialed 1471 -number withheld I phoned his fictitious 0800 number - not recognized. 


So I phoned the police to let them know. I wasn't the first! It's only just started apparently, but it is escalating. Their advice was to let as many people as possible know of this scam. The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it's real, so please make as many friends & family aware of this. How is it done? This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number - it should have been 0800 800 152 which takes you through to BT Business. 


The cutting off of the line is very simple, he stays on the line with the mute button on and you can't dial out - but he can hear you trying. (This is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it). When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be convinced! The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool many. By the way this is not about getting the cash as this would not get past merchant services - it is all about getting the credit card details which include the security number, to be used for larger purchases."

One Hundred Beats of the Clock

One Hundred Beats of the Clock Exhibition at the Heritage Gallery open 20th Jan - 3rd February
ONE hundred photographs for 100 years.
Teesside photographer Charles Twist has devised a unique project called “100 beats of the clock” to celebrate the centenary of the Transporter Bridge.
He has taken 100 pictures of the Bridge at regular intervals from sunrise to sunset.
By maintaining the camera in the same position and at the same angle, the composition is constant, but the direction of the light and the events of the day change from one picture to the next.
The photographs symbolise the passage of time with each print representing a year since 1911.
Charles said: “The regularity of the sequence alludes to the bridge’s own rhythms – the to-ing and fro-ing of the gondola and the commuters, the ebb and flow of the tides – and also to the mechanisation of society which made the bridge both possible and necessary.
“The regularity of the shoot mirrors the labour-intensive construction of the bridge and may therefore be seen as performance art. This feeling is reinforced by the use of a camera and lens, which would have been available to a photographer of 1911.”
All the photographs have been captured directly on to the paper, there are no negatives or digital files created so there are no other copies once a particular print has sold.
Therefore, each print is unique and directly linked to the moment and place.
This method relies on the use of direct positive paper, which produces black and white prints on gloss, fibre paper.
All 100 photographs will be exhibited and available to buy during the exhibition at The Heritage Gallery

NCPF Spectacular - 29th January 2012

Sunday 29th January 2012 

Preparations are well in hand for the 2012, NCPF Spectacular, to be staged in the Tyne Suite at Newcastle Novotel, on Sunday, January, 29th.  Our presenters for this whole day, celebration of photography are from Ireland, Des Clinton, FRPS, FIPF, MFIAP and just north of the Border, Rod Whelans, FRPS, MPAGB, HonPAGB, MFIAP and Ann Greiner, MPAGB, all of whose work is respected throughout the UK and abroad.
There will be two presentations in the morning followed by a hot carvery lunch, and then a further two during the afternoon. Mid-morning and mid-afternoon refreshments are also provided.
Members will be pleased to learn that surprisingly, we have been able to hold the same £25.00 ticket price (£13.00 excl. lunch) due to the generous sponsorship of ‘FOTOSPEED’ who will be in attendance with, no doubt attractive event offers.
A Grand Raffle featuring valuable prizes has always been a feature of these occasions and hopefully, 2012 will be no exception.

Yet more cause to celebrate members’ success with the results of the November PAGB Awards for Photographic Merit Adjudication and once again further recognition of Northern Focus from PSA.

Invitation to provide pictures for the NCPF We site Rolling Banner

As promised when the new NCPF website was launched eleven months ago, they would like to place a fresh set of photographs on the ‘Rolling Banner’ at the head of the web page. To do this they have to have sufficient images of the required quality. Ideally NCPF would like to post six images, each depicting one of the Six Areas – Northern, North Tyne, Southern, South Tyne, Wear and Western. They do have some in stock, which were donated last year, but would like more to conside and are therefore inviting members to submit suitable images to the webmaster for consideration.

Each image should clearly depict a feature of the Area concerned and if used a credit will be placed as with the present set of images. Each image must be 1000 pixels by 260 pixels and set at 300 dpi please (the resolution will be reduced for the web site). Remember this banner is the NCPF shop window and needs to be the very best to show to the world. The images should be emailed to the webmaster by no later than the 15th December 2011.

Two news items have been posted this week; with reports and pictures from both the North Tyne Area Print Battle and secondly Southern Area clubs results from the NYSD Annual Competitions.
