Photography Competition at Joe Cornish Galleries - closes 2nd July

Joe Cornish Galleries is holding its first Photography and Video Open competition this summer. All interested photographers and video artists over the age of 16 can submit their work to the competition which will be on display in the gallery in July and throughout August.  Click here for more information.

Improvers Group Dates

The Stokesley Room at the Town Hall has been booked for Improvers Group meetings next season.  Put the dates in your diaries now to be sure not to miss them. 


All Monday evenings from 7.15 - 9 pm approximately.


19th September, 31st October, 21st November and 12th December 2011.
16th January, 12th March and 16th April 2012.  


Currently there is no date booked for February but this could change.

Tornado at Battersby

As part of the North York Moors Railway's 175th anniversary celebrations, you can ride on a train pulled by  Tornado from Grosmont to Battersby, and return, today or tomorrow.  The train departs Grosmont at 20:00 and and returns at 22:15.  This will be the fist main line run behind Tornado since its recent repaint into BR Green.  Click here for more information.

Infinity Bridge Anniversary 2011

Last night Stockton put on a special display at the Infinity Bridge
They used illuminated jets of water pouring from the bridge
It was made special by the moon putting in an appearance although that made for some tricky exposure. Maybe some more work to be done on those photos

A new web site for Richmond Camera Club

Photoshop Bridge Update

There are updates for Photoshop and Bridge CS5 available from the Adobe website. However, you may have a problem as I did in installing the Bridge CS5 update. I kept getting a message to tell me to close Bridge CS5, even though it wasn't open. If this happens, open Bridge and go to Edit>Preferences>Advanced and un-tick the check-box that says, "Start Bridge at Login." Then close Bridge, download the update and everything should be fine. The same thing applies to the Camera RAW update which is also available.

Bempton to Blacktoft

Bird Photography Bempton and Blacktoft
I am proposing a round trip to Bempton cliffs and Blacktoft Sands RSPB reserve some time in the middle of May . This will not be for the faint hearted as i would want to be at Bempton at 7.30 am , preferable on the cliff at this time . Stay at Bempton till Midday then travel to Blacktoft reserve for the afternoon . This is a 209 miles round trip . I have room in the car for two more persons and would expect a contributions of £12 .00 per head to cover expenses . We would meet at Guisborough, my house as a starting point . The precise date would be confirmed depending on the weather , i would try and give as much notice as possible . This is a predominately bird photography . You should get good shots of Gannets, and various species of Auks . Blacktoft will provide stunning views of Marsh harrier and Avocets , this i can guarantee. Appeal for Volunteers

As many will now know there are three critical vacancies on the NCPF Executive:-
1. Competitions Organiser
2. Competition Officer – Prints
3. Competition Officer – Club Championship
We should all be grateful to the previous occupants of these posts who, whilst not seeking re-election at the recent AGM, remained in post unofficially to ensure that the 2011 Annual Competitions were able to go ahead. That competition is now complete and we have to look towards the future.

As a result Richard Speirs, President of the Federation, has appealed to the Federation as a whole for volunteers to take over these vitally important tasks. There is little or no prospect of volunteers from within the Executive, as all are fully committed to jobs already, some holding down two or more positions at the same time.

It is as simple as this, if the federation wants there to be a “Club Championship” next February, or “Annual Competitions” next April, then volunteers are going to have to come forward.

NCPF Annual Competition Full Results

The full results for the NCPF Annual Competition are now available by clicking on the link above.

In summary Stokesley PS had mixed results as follows:

Monochrome Prints

Stokesley were 6^th equal out of 29 clubs.  The winners were Dumfries with Northallerton in second place and Sunderland, West Cumbria and Workington sharing equal 3rd place.

John C Davies & John L Davies were each awarded a Highly Commended.  These pictures plus one from Paula Davies were selected as part of the NCPF entry to the annual PAGB exhibition. 

Paul W Forster had a print selected for the Selectors Choice Portfolio.

Colour prints

Stokesley were 11^th equal out of 30 clubs.  The winners were Keswick with Northallerton in second place and Dumfries 3rd

Paula Davies was awarded a Highly Commended.  John L Davies had a print selected as part of the NCPF entry to the annual PAGB exhibition.

David Smith and Guy Davies each had a print selected for the Selectors Choice Portfolio

Digital Projected Image

Stokesley were 2^nd out of 27 clubs.  The winning club was Northallerton with Sunderland and Gallery sharing 3rd place.

John L Davies was awarded the Hilton Trophy for the best creative image.  HC's were awarded to Ian Rathbone & David Smith (2).  David Smith had one image selected as part of the NCPF entry to the annual PAGB exhibition. 

Beginners Prints

Paul Rose was awarded Highly Commended.

Well done to all who took part and particularly to those who gained awards and/or had work selected for the Alliance entry or for the Selectors' Choice Portfolio.  

Congratulations also to Northallerton CC who were placed in every section of the competition.

Farne Islands return

A few people have expressed an interest in repeating last year's trip to the Farne Islands, so I will arrange a repeat run if there is enough interest. In order not to clash with the Malham weekend, I suggest the date of Wednesday 29th June - which is just about a week later than we went last year. Cost is likely to be around £27 for the trip to Inner Farne & Staple Island - about 5 1/2 hour outing in total. Alnwick & District Camera Club Exhibition

There is an Exhibition of Alnwick & District CC work entitled "Personal Views" at the Woodhorn Museum, QE11 Country Park, Ashington NE63 7YF from 23rd April to 10th July 2011.

New printing company after RGB

I used the Brighouse printing service during the last few days and pleased to report the service and quality of prints is rather better than I have been getting elsewhere. They will give us the discounted rate which ammounts to £1.50 for an 18 x 12" prints with Gloss, matte, lustre, pearl and metallic finishes. I have used the lustre type prints and have been very pleased with it (will bring some samples into the club for members to view). They would prefer us to have a club named account that would allow us to transfer large files onto their hard drive and be ready a few days later to collect. All very civilised, and for those who do not have their own printers this may be a very good option. See me at the club if you want further details. Follow the link above to go to their web site. NCPF Annual Competition Correction

An error crept in to the results shown on the NCPF website for the Miles Audas Trophy for the Best Club entry of PDI.  This has now been corrected and Stokesley PS were in 2nd place not 3rd as stated previously.

Arrangements are now complete for the weekend.

Members of NCPF Affiliated clubs and their family and friends will, on production of an 'NCPF pass', now available from your Club Secretary, enjoy discounted admission fees over the weekend. Prices per day (10am-5pm) are Adult £11; Senior Citizen £10, Children £6 (or, ‘Annual Pass’ for Adult £16, Child £10 ). 

As well as the myriad of photographic opportunities, there is a 'classic car' event on the Sunday, and in addition to this we are organising two further photographic opportunities for members.

Firstly, and as already announced, over the weekend of the event we shall, in full co-operation with the authorities at Beamish, be mounting an “Exhibition of Members’ Prints” and these will be available for sale. Please see the details on the link below. It is now timely for members to be considering prints to be submitted to reach the organiser by the due date!

Secondly, the new competition associated with the weekend, the “NCPF Beamish Trophy”, will be for prints of images exposed at and during the event. Please see the link below for entry details and dates.

NCPF Annual Competition

The annual NCPF competition took place at the weekend.  Congratulations to Dr John Davies for winning the Hilton Trophy for Best Creative Projected Image with 'L'Estate'.  Stokesley PS came equal 3rd in the Digital Projected Image Section.  The headline results can be seen on the  NCPF website

Whitby Abbey at Twilight

I have just noticed in my English Heritage magazine that on Fri 13th and Sat 14th May, Whitby Abbey will be open from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Weather permitting it could be an ideal opportunity to get pics of the building with a sunset in the background (it is not normally open in the evenings.) Also, I believe it will be illuminated. Admission is free to members of EH but otherwise £6 or less (depending on status.)

More Good News for Stokesley PS

NCPF Inter Club Championships

Once again, Stokesley Photographic Society had a good day at Washington this weekend. At the end of the final in the Print section, we were joint 1st with Northallerton. Sadly in the tie-break, no matter what the quality, our 5 home-grown prints were never going to beat Northallerton's 5 from exotic locations around the world (am I becoming cynical but there is something about flashy foreign birds that causes judges' collective knees to tremble). However, taking 2nd place means that we will once more be going down to Connagh's Quay in the autumn for the National championships. In the Projected Images section, things were a bit more clear cut and despite leading at the half-way stage, we lost by a couple of marks, once more to Northallerton. However, this still means that we will be representing the NCPF in the summer in the National PDI championships in Warwick. On an individual note, congratulations to Paul W Forster whose print of Winter Trees (remember it from the recent Peter Denham competition?) was adjudged the best over all monochrome print on the day

Great British Cup

In this annual national inter-club competition, Stokesley entered the Open section (to all intents, the "advanced" group) and came 22nd out of 109 clubs. Such was the closeness at the top that one other measly mark on top of our 163 would have placed us in the top 20 and two would have given us 15th place. For those of you who are interested, Northallerton were well below us with only 159 marks.

In the Nature section we were less successful but still managed 36th place out of 97 clubs.

Congratulations and many thanks to all who supplied me with photographs for these various competitions. Allow yourselves to bask in the warm glow of our success while it lasts!

Vivian Maier

I have just been reading the amazing story about a previously unheard of photographer, Vivian Maier. She worked for most of her life working as a children's nanny for wealthy families in Chicago and spent her spare time photographing life on the streets of the city between the 1950s and 1990s. She shared her pictures with no one but after she died in 2009, her work was discovered in an auction. It is estimated that there are around 100,000 negatives, many of which are still undeveloped. In my opinion, she will eventually be recognised as one of the major photographers of the 20th century on a par with the likes of Cartier Bresson. TechTip -Take fine control of your cursor

Ian Rathbone recently came across the above tip in the paper.

Anyone editing photos,editing documents or taking screen grabs will want to select precise areas on a computer screen-but it is impossible to move the cursor accurately with a mouse.
Under Windows Vista and Windows 7, though, the cursor can be moved pixel by pixel using the keyboard.

To enable this option, open the Ease of Access option in control panel, select the mouse control menu and select the 'Set up mouse keys option' under the heading Keyboard Shortcut, tick the box labelled 'Turn on Mouse Keys with left Alt+left SHIFT+NUM LOCK'. Save your changes, and you'll be able to move the cursor by tiny increments up and down, left and right, using the four arrow keys on the the keyboard. Selecting Control & Shift will speed up the movement.

Note: do not select the 'Turn on mouse Keys' option as this disables your numeric key pad.

NCPF Summer Event

The Summer Event will take place at Beamish Museum on 18th,19th,20th June 2011. Included in the Event will be an exhibition of members prints for sale, and as a spin off, a new 'NCPF Beamish Trophy' for prints of images taken during the Event.

NYSDPA Biannual Lecture 2011

Joe Cornish will be giving this lecture called 'A Landscape Photographer's View' on Friday 11th March 2011 at The Southlands Centre Middlesbrough, starting at 7:30.
Tickets cost £6 including refreshments. If you are interested in going please let either Allan Snape or myself know and pay the £6 so we can order the tickets in good time.

Don Morrison HonPAGB, HonEFIAP

It is with great sadness that I have to report that Don Morrison passed away on Christmas Eve.  Don was a former member of Newcastle PS, and President of NCPF from 1965 to 1967. He also served the PAGB with distinction over many years, being its President from 1975 to 1977 and was a Honorary Life Vice-President of PAGB. 


The funeral arrangements are as follows:

Cremation to be held on Monday 10th January 2011 at 12.15pm at the West Road Crematorium, Newcastle, NE5 2JL.  

Family flowers only.   Donations, if you wish, to Marie Curie.

The Crematorium is situated just off the A1 bypassing Newcastle to the west.

Leave the A1 at the A69/A186 Interchange and travel on the A186 toward the city centre.

The crematorium is on the left very shortly after passing the cross roads with the A191.

"RIVER TO RIDGE" Landscape Photography Exhibition

Garry Brannigan's new exhibition will be at The Station Gallery, Richmond, North Yorkshire DL10 4LD from January 2nd - January 23rd, 2011

 

Richmond-based landscape photographer Garry Brannigan stages an exhibition at The Station in Richmond, North Yorkshire, that celebrates the natural beauty of Northern Britain's upland landscape.

 

"River To Ridge" has 30 new photographs made in Swaledale, County Durham, The Lake District, The Peak District, Isle of Skye, Torridon and Inverpolly in the North West Highlands of Scotland.

 

Many of the photographs were created on overcast days with the intention of showing how diffused and even light accentuates the vibrant colour palette found in our upland landscapes. In addition, a small number were made in gentle rain which has added to the intensity of the colours.

 

The exhibition runs from January 2nd until January 23rd and is open daily from 9am to 11pm.

 

Garry Brannigan is one of the country's most popular instructors in the art of landscape photography and he runs courses and workshops in many of the locations highlighted in the exhibition.

Patch Files for Profiling and CS5

I have discovered a problem when you need to print patch files for obtaining printer profiles.  This affects people with CS5 (also CS4 for Mac).  But there is a workaround.


When you are printing the patch files you must select 'No colour adjustments' in two places.  One of these options is missing in CS5 (CS4 for Mac).  There is a workaround and if any Stokesley PS member needs more information feel free to contact me.

Many thanks for Chairman John and Rob who did all the driving in not always pleasant conditions. The weather could perhaps have been kinder but in comparison with the day after it was almost a heatwave.

An SPS Year Book

Next season will be the club's 25th Anniversary and the committee have decided that it would be a good idea to launch a year book of SPS members' work.

We would like all club members to take part.

Please send two pictures to me resized to 2048 x 1536 and 300 ppi. The files should be in sRGB format. You will need to use 'Save As' to save as a jpeg rather than 'Save for Web' which changes the ppi to 72. Use the highest quality jpeg setting. The pictures used will be your own choice and can be either monochrome or colour but should have been taken after January 2009.

Rename your files as 1-xxx-title and 2-xxx-title, where xxx is your membership number and the title is how you would like it to be identified in the book. If you have any questions please contact me directly by phone or e-mail (both are in the programme booklet).

Whether we use one or two pictures will depend on how many are sent. If only 35 members take part we will use both pictures. However I hope that more than 35 members will participate and then only one picture from each person will be used. Please ensure that your preferred picture is the one numbered 1-xxx-title.

Epson Printer Problems

We just had our Epson R2400 printer throw up a message box to say that maintenance was required. This usually means that it believes the waste ink reservoir is full, but it works this out on a counter of how many cleaning cycles have been performed. This reservoir is in the base of the printer and the waste ink is soaked up by an absorbent pad. You can check if it really is full by dabbing a piece of kitchen roll into the base anywhere along the width below the print head path. If it is comes up clean, the reservoir is not full. Obviously, if you find ink on the kitchen roll after dabbing, or if you get ink on the backs of your prints, then you do need to send it off or take it to a recognised agent. However, if it is not full you can avoid sending the printer off for maintenance by downloading some free software to reset the counter from http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml It is a Russian site and supports a wide range of printers. The software allows several other things to be done, such as cleaning black inks and colours separately.

During my recent California holiday, I called into the small town of Sonoma for a coffee stop and happened to park outside a photographic gallery. I can't resist these but I am usually underwhelmed by the exhibits inside. However on this occasion I was "blown away" by the quality of the images. The gallery belonged to a photographer called Lisa Kristine and was full of large high quality photographs of people in faraway places. There was also a video documentary running of Lisa explaining how she went about taking her photographs and her relationship with the subjects. I purchased 2 different videos which I hope to show at the club one day but in the meantime I would commend you to look at www.lisakristine.com for a flavour of what captured my imagination on that day.

Members' Galleries

Two galleries on the club's main website have been updated.  Have you looked there lately and can you spot which ones?


Any member of the society can have their own web gallery on our main website.  All you need to do is send me up to 6 jpeg files, at normal competition size, and I will do the rest.  Name the files with the title of the image.


If you already have a gallery on the main website why not get it updated.  A website - or blog - will die if there is no new input and people will stop visiting.

New Season

Good news, our new season starts on Sept.9th.
The opening evening is traditionally an opportunity to get together to pay our fees and to see some of the photographs taken by members during the summer.
So, don't forget to bring your memory sticks or CDs and hand them to Dave Wright or Paula who will download them into the projector. The number of entries per member may be restricted depending on numbers received.
