'Moorsview' - Saturday 31st October 2015
‘MOORSVIEW' is a new landscape photography event being organised in Pickering, North Yorkshire. The event began life with an idle conversation about some of the well known landscape photographers who live close by - Joe Cornish and David Ward, to name but two.
This led on to consideration of the fantastic variety of opportunities offered to photographers by the landscapes of the North York Moors and coastline. This enthusiasm was tempered, however, by various recent instances of photographers getting into difficulties when out in the wilds.
From these small beginnings the idea for ‘MOORSVIEW' was born - an event that would blend photographic inspiration and instruction, with advice on keeping safe whilst ‘getting the shot’:
• Assembling renowned local photographers to celebrate the beauty of the North York Moors and coastline
• Offering practical safety advice for photographers heading out into the wilds - especially in winter conditions
• Providing guidance on outdoor gear for landscape photography - choosing it, using it, and maintaining it
Who is involved in MOORSVIEW..?
MOORSVIEW has been put together in partnership with Neil Armstrong - of Trailblazer Outdoors, in Pickering. Neil is a long standing member of Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team (SRMRT) - who will be providing the safety sessions on the day, and will benefit from proceeds from the event.
But the core of the day will be a series of inspirational talks by some fantastic local landscape photographers:
David Ward - Into the Light
David Ward needs little introduction for readers of On Landscape. As one of Britain's foremost landscape photographers, his eye for shape and form is without equal and produces work that is startling in its clarity and intensity.
For MOORSVIEW David is taking the subject of ‘weather’ as a focus for his presentation - focusing in particular on shooting in challenging conditions. As someone who relishes shooting in so-called ‘bad’ weather, I will be fascinated to hear what guidance he can offer.
Lizzie Shepherd - Lizzie Shepherd Photography
Lizzie is another photographer who regularly writes for On Landscape - recently on the trials and tribulations of building your own gallery, and the practicalities of photographing from skis. For MOORSVIEW Lizzie will turn her eye to the artistic opportunities offered by an area where she runs regular photographic workshops under the ‘Tripod Travels’ banner:
Lizzie says: “We have some spectacular scenery…on the Moors and on the Yorkshire coast, as well as in some of the lesser known areas in between. As I get to know these areas better and better, I find myself increasingly drawn to capturing the hidden landscape….Beauty and intrigue surrounds us and I hope that, as well as showcasing some of our classic views, my photographs reveal a little bit of the less obvious, hidden scenes - things that people might otherwise just walk by.”
Richard & Janet Burdon - RJB Photographic
Pickering based husband and wife team Richard and Janet are both past finalists in the Landscape Photographer of the Year and also the Scottish Nature Photography Awards. Their presentation at MOORSVIEW will tackle the thorny issue of establishing an individual ‘identity’ or ‘style’ in landscape photography.
Beginning with colour, Richard will discuss how their exploration of minimalist monochrome work - particularly in winter - has been inspirational, and led to a certain ‘brand identity’ for RJB Photographic. Janet will also be speaking about her journey into Infra-red photography - from initial beginnings using infra-red film, through using adaptors on an un-modified digital camera, and on to the present day using a modified DSLR.
Dave Mead - Farndale Fotos
Dave is a farmer in the beautiful valley of Farndale - in the heart of the North York Moors National Park. In recent years he has been lucky enough to travel to both the Arctic and the Antarctic with his camera, but Dave’s main inspiration remains the immediate area around where he lives - and that will be the focus of his MOORSVIEW presentation.
Dave says: “My idea of happiness is to be sat on the moor above Farndale, camera at the ready, waiting for that elusive evening light to pour forth upon the scene in front of me. Managing to capture that scene, to do justice to it in an image that I have made, is a buzz that takes some beating”.
Karl Holtby - Karl Holtby Photography
Karl is a photographer with a particular interest in the natural world, landscapes and fine art photography. With a background in conservation, it is often the ecological detail that intrigues him. This, along with man’s influence on the landscape is what captures his imagination, as much as a stunning vista.
Karl is often out ‘biking and hiking’ on the North York Moors, and will bring the photographic lessons learned to his MOORSVIEW presentation. In particular, he will discuss his use of lighter weight, more compact cameras such as the Sigma Merrill and Sony A7R. Karl is currently involved in collaborations with Sigma Imaging UK, and also for Manfrotto - writing articles for websites and social media.
Karl has exhibited widely, most notably at the Joe Cornish Galleries, in Northallerton. Karl has a varied portfolio of commercial clients and he now runs bespoke workshops.
John Clifton - PC Photographic
I am a walker by inclination and, since moving to Pickering more than a decade ago, have spent much of my time exploring the ups and downs of the North York Moors National Park. I will draw on these travels, and the images I have made, to introduce the MOORSVIEW sessions - picking out some of my favourite places to photograph - from the well known to the somewhat more obscure.
Personally I tend to be drawn to the grand in my photography - think big skies, serious weather, and sweeping vistas with distant horizons - things there are no shortage of on The Moors..! But I am also fascinated by the details of nature - the intricacy of a seed head, the transformative power of hoar frost, the elegiac beauty of a decaying tree.
How do I book a ticket for MOORSVIEW..?
MOORSVIEW will run all day - taking place on Saturday 31st October, at The Kirk Theatre, Pickering. Day tickets will cost £60 - including refreshments, and a buffet lunch provided by The Black Swan, Pickering. You can book your place now by following this link to the Events Section of the SRMRT website: http://www.srmrt.org.uk/events/moorsview/
In addition to the sessions highlighted above, there will be a display of outdoor gear by Trailblazer Outdoors - featuring Paramo Directional Clothing in particular. All ticket holders will also be entered for a prize draw, to take place at the end of the day. Prizes are still being pledged, but already include a large framed print from one of the speakers, a half-day of 1 to 1 photographic training from another, and a range of valuable outdoor gear.
Look out for further details on the web - just use the hashtag #MOORSVIEW within Facebook or Twitter. It is shaping up to be an inspirational, and above all 'useful' event - dovetailing the artistic with the practical aspects of landscape photography. We hope that it will also raise awareness of the photographic opportunities offered by the North York Moors and Coast, whilst hi-lighting the need for adequate preparation before heading out into the wilds..!
We would like to thank On Landscape in particular for supporting MOORSVIEW. In particular, Tim Parkin has generously offered to loan us his very expensive projector - and fortunately his expertise in operating it. Tim is also hoping to film the MOORSVIEW sessions, for subsequent dissemination through On Landscape.

Maurice Sanderson
Maurice Sanderson, a long time member of Durham Photographic
Society and well known within the NCPF as a prolific contributor to
competitions and a club lecturer has died at the age of 89. He had been
in failing health for a number of years.
Maurice was well known for his imaginative images and was a prolific winner of competitions aimed at innovative photography both within his own club and at NCPF level. In the 1980s and 1990s his talent enabled him to create images that to most of us seemed almost impossible until the advent of digital photography.
A widower, he was a past president and for many years treasurer of Durham Photographic Society. He was a hard working member of the society’s committee and a valued friend to many.
His funeral is 10.30am next Friday (June 12) at Durham Crematorium.

Exhibition by Ripon City Photographic Society
I’m writing, on behalf of Ripon City Photographic Society,
to invite the members of your organisation to visit our Society’s
Photographic Exhibition at the Curzon Cinema in Ripon. The Exhibition,
which will be in the upstairs Studio at the cinema, will be open during
cinema hours from Tuesday 10th February through to Sunday 22nd February.
On display will be around 40 prints and 60 digital images showing the wide range of our members’ interests and photographic skills. We hope you will be able to visit our event and look forward to meeting you and sharing with you, through our exhibition, our mutual interest in photography.
Alongside your visit to our exhibition, why not take a walk around Ripon? Though it is one of the country’s smallest cities, Ripon offers the photographer a wealth of photo opportunities. From our beautiful Cathedral to the historic Workhouse, Prison and Courthouse Museums and the many and varied architectural styles of the buildings in and around the Market Square, there is a picture at every turn.
Ripon has many links with Lewis Carroll some of which are captured in the carved figures of the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ characters in the delightful Spa Gardens.
Alternatively, you may wish to include in your visit an afternoon or evening showing of a film. The Curzon, our new ‘state-of-the-art’ two-screen cinema, shows the latest in mainstream, independent and family films from around the world as well as events such as the New York Metropolitan Opera and National Theatre Live.
The location of the Curzon Cinema is 74-75 North Street, Ripon, HG4 1DP. Films scheduled for showing during the period of our exhibition are ‘Kingsman’, ’Selma’, ’50 Shades of Grey’ (a film about black and white photography, perhaps?) and ‘Sean the Sheep’ for half term week. For times of showings and full information, please see their website: www.curzoncinemas.com/cinemas/ripon/
For information about the Ripon visit: www.discoverripon.org/
For information about our society visit: www.riponcityphotographicsociety.co.uk/
Though some car parking is available in the Market Square, two larger car parks are sited off Marshall Way and at the junction of Moss’ Arcade and Victoria Grove. All are council operated and are pay and display.
All good wishes,
Derek Hodson

Competition 'Three of a Kind'
Simon is on holiday for the handing in date of this competition, so could you please send all digital files to me at john-sps@ntlworld.com
Note: handing in date is 12th February
This competition will be a little different to normal! There will a print section and a digital images section, for both Intermediate and Advanced sections as usual. For both prints and digital images you will need to enter a set of three separate prints or images. The idea is to show a related set, or panel of images, so a group of three good pictures should beat an unrelated group of three stunning ones. Thus the best sets won’t necessarily be pictures that would stand alone as good images.

IGPOTY Exhibition and Workshop
Nunnington Hall and Rievaulx Terrace are holding an exhibition of the
winners of the two most recent International Garden Photographer of the
Year competition from Saturday 14th February - Sunday 22nd March. We are
the only confirmed venue in the North of England holding this
exhibition and it will be opening in Kew Gardens in London at the same
time.
In conjunction with this exhibition, internationally renowned photographer Phillip Smith, will be delivering a workshop entitled ‘Better Plant and Garden Photography’ on Saturday 14th March from 10.00 – 16.00 at Nunnington Hall. This is a rare opportunity to work with a talented photographer and pick up new skills in the beautiful surroundings of Nunnington Hall.
International Garden Photographer of the Year – Garden Photography workshop
Date - Saturday 14th March 2015
Contact details - Nunnington Hall, North Yorkshire, YO62 5UY, 01439 748283, nunningtonhall@nationaltrust.org.uk
Cost for the course will be £70 per person and will include lunch and free entry to Nunnington Hall
Schedule
Doors open 9.30 – 10.00 for coffee
Course starts 10.00
Lunch 12.00 – 13.00 in tearoom (set menu, we will confirm the exact menu details closer to the time. There will be two courses, vegetarian option available)
Course finishes 16.00
Course details
The workshop welcomes photographers of all levels and no specific level of expertise or previous experience is expected. The aim of the course is to provide you with a set of skills and techniques that you can use to improve your photography of plants and gardens no matter what type of equipment you use. You don’t need the latest expensive cameras – all levels are welcome.
The workshop is run by Philip Smith, professional photographer and Founder of International Garden Photographer of the year in association with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. His work appears in books and magazines worldwide.
There will be an emphasis on training the eye to see photographic opportunities, as well as ideas and techniques to enable you to make the most of the locations. The course will be a mix of lecture, practical work, and group discussion.
The lecture will consist of a talk by Philip Smith accompanied by images of his and other photographers’ work to illustrate key points. The aim is to give you a sound basis for developing your techniques later in the day. Topics covered will include macro, composition, depth of field, focus, priority modes, control of light, and light and colour. An overview of digital processing will also be given.
The practical work will involve work in the garden. You will pursue your own subjects and interest, in addition to undertaking projects suggested by Philip. There will be ample opportunities for one to one discussions with Philip about any aspect of your photography.
The afternoon will involve a group discussion about the work that students have undertaken during the course, with constructive and inspiring comments about the work on show by both tutor and fellow students.
You will get more out of the course if you have a camera with interchangeable lenses, and particularly if you have a macro lens. This applies both to DSLR and smaller compact system cameras. Extension tubes used with normal lenses are also useful and suitable for this kind of photography. You should bring a stable tripod if you can, a remote shutter release and lens hood. Bring your camera’s manual if you have been struggling with its controls. You will need plenty of media cards and a fully charged battery (or two!) for your camera.
The course is about exploration and moving out of your comfort zone to take great pictures. But it is not deadly serious nor is it a course about the latest technology. In a friendly, open environment, we aim to inspire you to get more pleasure and fun from your photography for years to come

A message from Steve & Ann Toon
Dear Photographer,
We're just sending round an email to advise of a new photo event we've arranged for next November: the Winter Wildlife Weekend at Caerlaverock Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust reserve, on the north shore of the Solway Firth in south west Scotland. The reserve is less than an hour's drive from Carlisle and the M6.
This is a two night residential weekend, with accommodation in the farmhouse at the heart of the reserve, on the nights of Friday 27 and Saturday 28th November. All meals and refreshments are included in the price of £165 per photographer. We've aimed to make this an affordable break. The farmhouse is recently refurbished, and while accommodation is simple and homely, it's cosy and comfortable and makes a great base for photography. Because we're staying on the reserve we can be out at first light, hours before the public have access.
Caerlaverock is famous for it's huge flocks of overwintering barnacle geese, but also has a wide variety of other water birds, including beautiful whooper swans. There are plenty of hides for photography, including a very comfortable heated hide only yards from the farmhouse. Roe deer and foxes are often seen on the reserve, and as a special treat we're almost certain to be visited each night by badgers, which feed outside the conservatory window.
It's more of a pre-Christmas get-together for like-minded people who enjoy wildlife and photography, than a formal teaching event, but we will have a short tutorial during non-photographing hours, and there will be plenty of opportunity to chat to us for advice, or to show us your pictures for critiques.
Single guests will be sharing a room (though we won't mix genders!), allowing us not to charge a single supplement. Some rooms are en suite, others share a bathroom: en suites will be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis, so book early!
There are more details on our website and as usual we're happy to answer any questions you might have before booking.
Hope you can make it!
Steve & Ann
