Club Portrait Evening Thursday 12th December

Message from John Devlin:

Our model Sammy is semi-pro, very pretty and very experienced and will enable your members to get great shots!

So what we plan is:
Explain the lights, their set-up and how to meter etc.
We will put Sammy through some posing techniques and show the difference between working with a model and
someone who just wants a photograph taking.
Hands on for your members so encouragement to bring camera's etc is a must.
Brian and I will be on hand through-out for anyone who may want to ask questions or has any problems.

It will be a good night and those taking pictures will have no excuses in not getting pictures!

Photoshop CC and Lightroom 5 special offer from Adobe

Here’s your chance to get Photoshop CC and Lightroom 5 and your own customizable Behance ProSite to host your online portfolio – all for £8.78 per month! Yes, that’s correct, from today until December 2, 2013, you can sign up for this offer – and you do not have to have owned a previous version of Photoshop to qualify. You will need to commit to a one-year plan.
If you would like Photoshop and have not upgraded in recent years then this seems to be a good deal.  If the price stays the same then it would be 6 years before you will have spent the same amount as buying CS6 from Amazon (£616 currently).
See the website for more information.

NCPF Spectacular 2014

USA Landscape Photographer of the Year.

Charlie Waite has launched a new international photography competition called USA Landscape Photographer of the Year.

It is designed to give the opportunity for photographers from all over the world to have their talent recognised and rewarded with their images of the rural or urban landscape of the USA.

This is your chance to have your images seen by some of the most respected names in landscape photography today, to win some amazing cash and in kind prizes and be exhibited as part of the Winners' Exhibition that will tour the USA and Europe, not to mention the chance to be named USA Landscape Photographer of the Year 2014!

If you have visited the USA within the last 5 years, or plan to before the 16th February 2014 (when entries close), do consider entering a portfolio of 3 images for a chance to win the overall title award, or a single fabulous image to win one of the category awards - Classic view, Black & White, Landscape on the move (compact camera), Urban and My USA (anything goes!)

Just look at some of the judges we have lined up - Art Wolfe, David Muench, Christopher Burkett, Jim Patterson, Tim Fitzharris, Marc Muench, Marc Adamus, Antony Spencer, Justin Reznick and Charlie Waite!

So get reviewing your images from your last trip to the USA, or consider visiting before 16th February and enter USA Landscape Photographer of the Year for your chance to win!

RHS Photographic Competition closes 1st November

With the closing date for this year's RHS Photographic Competition fast approaching, we're having one last push to remind photographers to get their entries in before Friday 1st November to be in with a chance of winning the coveted title of RHS Photographer of the Year 2013 and the top prize of £1000. The standard of entries for this year is already high, but we're keen to make sure that no budding entrants are left behind, so we very much hope that you will pass this message on to your members.

According to judge and professional garden photographer Clive Nichols,'shooting at dawn in the autumn is the perfect time to take pictures outdoors as flowers and foliage will still be decorated with dew and cobwebs which can make for some striking images.'  Now that we are in the midst of autumn it's the perfect time to get outside and capture some truly spectacular shots.

Full details of the competition including the entry form can be found on this website.

A Message from the RHS Photographer of the Year Organisers

At this time of year, when many photography clubs and societies are starting their new season after the holidays, we thought you might be interested in inviting your members to enter this year's RHS Photographic Competition, to compete for the prestigious title of RHS Photographer of the Year and a share in the £5,500 prize fund. There is a cash prize of £1000 for the overall winner as well as prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings in each of the six categories - plants, gardens, details, seasons, wildlife and people in the garden - with no limit on the number of entries you can submit. Winners and finalists also get a huge amount of exposure with their work featuring heavily in the UK and international press and being exhibited across all RHS Gardens. We would love you to pass this great opportunity on to your members and print off some of the attached brochures to distribute.

2012 winner Josie Elias, said: "Winning the competition was a huge honour and seeing my photograph all over the national and international press was very, very exciting. It led on to a whole new world of possibilities and the prestige of the title has really helped my career. I would encourage anyone, professional or amateur, garden lover or novice to enter."

World-renowned garden photographer Clive Nichols will be chairing the judging panel this year. Clive's work has appeared in hundreds of books as well as in countless magazines, calendars and brochures, and he regularly gives master classes in flower and garden photography for the RHS, the next being on 17th September at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey. All entries into the competition are also considered for the Medici Cards Award, presented to the photographer who submits the image best suited for reproduction as a greetings card. The winner will receive 200 copies of the card which they can then proudly distribute to friends and family.

The RHS is always keen to promote great garden and plant photography, and this competition offers an opportunity for all professional or amateur photographers from anywhere in the world, to showcase their best garden-related images. To find out more about the competition, and to submit your images, please visit our website.
The closing date is Friday 1st November 2013, so there is plenty of time yet to upload your images. It may just be that the next RHS Photographer of the Year is one of YOUR members!

National Audio Visual Championship

The 18th NAVC takes place on the 13th to 15th September at Sutton Bonington, which is situated on the border of Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. 53 sequences have been entered and they will all be judged over four sessions on the Saturday and Sunday. Why not come for the whole weekend or just a single judging session and see the current "Best of British" AV Sequences?

The way we buy Photoshop is changing

Adobe have announced that there will be no more CS versions of Photoshop.  They obviously want us to subscribe to the Creative Cloud and Photoshop CC.  I have found some interesting articles which are worth a read.  It looks as if we will no longer be able to buy Photoshop CS as a boxed version but can still buy as a download.

Here are the three links which I have read.  All by Photoshop evangelists or, in the case of the FAQs, an Adobe employee.  The first link helps if you are a Lightroom user who also uses Photoshop CS or Elements.

http://lightroomkillertips.com/?p=4896

http://blogs.adobe.com/jkost/2013/05/adobe-photoshop-favorite-features-for-photographers.html

http://blogs.adobe.com/photoshopdotcom/2013/05/answering-your-questions-about-photoshop-cc.html

One answer to a FAQ is of interest to people like us who are hobbyist photographers was this:

Q: Can I still buy a boxed/perpetual version of Photoshop?
A: Photoshop CS6 is still available for purchase as a perpetual software license, via electronic download from Adobe.com and authorized resellers. The Photoshop team will provide bug fixes and security updates for Photoshop CS6 while it is still available for purchase. New features and all the other Creative Cloud services, however, will not be added to Photoshop CS6.
Adobe and authorized resellers are no longer selling boxed software, as the company has moved to delivering features and services on a more continuous basis via Photoshop CC. See “Breaking from Tradition: Photoshop CC.”
