This was sent by a friend of a club member and it is not a scam e-mail.

"I received a phone call from BT, informing me that he was disconnecting me because of an unpaid bill.. He demanded payment immediately of £31.00 or it would be £ 118.00 to re-connect at a later date. The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with Virgin Media, allegedly VM have to pay BT a percentage for line rental! I asked the guy's name - he gave me the very 'English' John Peacock with a very 'African' accent & phone number 0800 0800 152. Obviously the fellow realized I didn't believe his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up & try phoning someone - he would dis-connect my phone to prevent this. AND HE DID !! My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing - until he phoned me again.

Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT. I asked how the payment was to be made & he said credit card, there & then. I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him, I didn't believe his name or that he worked for BT. He hung up. I dialed 1471 -number withheld I phoned his fictitious 0800 number - not recognized.

So I phoned the police to let them know. I wasn't the first! It's only just started apparently, but it is escalating. Their advice was to let as many people as possible know of this scam. The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it's real, so please make as many friends & family aware of this. How is it done? This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number - it should have been 0800 800 152 which takes you through to BT Business.

The cutting off of the line is very simple, he stays on the line with the mute button on and you can't dial out - but he can hear you trying. (This is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it). When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be convinced! The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool many. By the way this is not about getting the cash as this would not get past merchant services - it is all about getting the credit card details which include the security number, to be used for larger purchases."

Teesside photographerCharles Twist has devised a unique project called “100 beats of theclock” to celebrate the centenary of the Transporter Bridge.
Hehas taken 100 pictures of the Bridge at regular intervals fromsunrise to sunset.
Bymaintaining the camera in the same position and at the same angle,the composition is constant, but the direction of the light and theevents of the day change from one picture to the next.
Thephotographs symbolise the passage of time with each printrepresenting a year since 1911.
Charlessaid: “The regularity of the sequence alludes to the bridge’s ownrhythms – the to-ing and fro-ing of the gondola and the commuters,the ebb and flow of the tides – and also to the mechanisation ofsociety which made the bridge both possible and necessary.
“Theregularity of the shoot mirrors the labour-intensive construction ofthe bridge and may therefore be seen as performance art. This feelingis reinforced by the use of a camera and lens, which would have beenavailable to a photographer of 1911.”
All the photographshave been captured directly on to the paper, there are no negativesor digital files created so there are no other copies once aparticular print has sold.
Therefore,each print is unique and directly linked to the moment and place.
Thismethod relies on the use of direct positive paper, which producesblack and white prints on gloss, fibre paper.
All 100 photographswill be exhibited and available to buy during the exhibition at TheHeritage Gallery

Sunday 29th January 2012

Preparations are well in hand for the 2012, NCPF Spectacular, to be staged in the Tyne Suite at Newcastle Novotel, on Sunday, January, 29th. Our presenters for this whole day, celebration of photography are from Ireland, Des Clinton, FRPS, FIPF, MFIAP and just north of the Border, Rod Whelans, FRPS, MPAGB, HonPAGB, MFIAP and Ann Greiner, MPAGB, all of whose work is respected throughout the UK and abroad.
There will be two presentations in the morning followed by a hot carvery lunch, and then a further two during the afternoon. Mid-morning and mid-afternoon refreshments are also provided.
Members will be pleased to learn that surprisingly, we have been able to hold the same £25.00 ticket price (£13.00 excl. lunch) due to the generous sponsorship of ‘FOTOSPEED’ who will be in attendance with, no doubt attractive event offers.
A Grand Raffle featuring valuable prizes has always been a feature of these occasions and hopefully, 2012 will be no exception.

Invitation to provide pictures for the NCPF We site Rolling Banner

As promised when the new NCPF website was launched eleven months ago, they would like to place a fresh set of photographs on the ‘Rolling Banner’ at the head of the web page. To do this they have to have sufficient images of the required quality. Ideally NCPF would like to post six images, each depicting one of the Six Areas – Northern, North Tyne, Southern, South Tyne, Wear and Western. They do have some in stock, which were donated last year, but would like more to conside and are therefore inviting members to submit suitable images to the webmaster for consideration.

Each image should clearly depict a feature of the Area concerned and if used a credit will be placed as with the present set of images. Each image must be 1000 pixels by 260 pixels and set at 300 dpi please (the resolution will be reduced for the web site). Remember this banner is the NCPF shop window and needs to be the very best to show to the world. The images should be emailed to the webmaster by no later than the 15th December 2011.

More on the Scam Phone Calls

With reference to my earlier post one of our club members has been in touch to let me know of his experience:

I've just read your Blog. I had such a call about two months ago. As it happened my computer had been running very slowly for a while and Bryan had been to fix it.

The call came at 8am when I was still in bed. They told me that they were Microsoft (R & D sticks in my mind) and that my computer was in danger of crashing and that I should go to it and they would talk me through it. I told the caller (Indian I think ) that I couldn't do that at the time and he said he would call back. A couple of hours later I rang Bryan and he advised me to have nothing to do with them..I had another call from them the next day. I could only hear odd bits of what the caller was saying and I said so. Another person came on the line and I told him that I wasn't interested so he said he would hand over to the Senior Floor Manager. She more or less repeated what had been said before; that I had downloaded some programs that had infected the computer and it was going to crash. I asked how they knew but I don't remember being told. In the end she said, "Well it's your computer. Have a nice day and keep smiling."

I've heard nothing from them since then. It certainly pays to be very cautious and have a suspicious mind.

Microsoft - Beware of scam phone calls

A friend of mine has sent me the following e-mail. I have checked the Microsoft website and this story does appear to be true. This particular friend is very knowledgeable about computers and the e-mail I had from him was genuine. As a test I replied to him and got a sensible reply!

He said:

I have just had a call from a guy claiming to be from Microsoft who said that they had been receiving lots of reports from my computer that it was about to crash and I would lose all my data and, wait for it………….even my IP address. He sounded really genuine and even had the same voice of a guy I spoke to many months ago regarding a problem I did have. He wanted me to connect to a web site whereby their engineers could remotely connect to my computer and sort out the problem. He had my name, address and even email and I could so easily have fallen for it but would never have let anybody remotely control my computer if I had fallen for it. So be aware. This is the latest scam to hit the market. If they get in they will nick all your credit card details and other stuff.

If you are using Windows 7 to be safe please turn off REMOTE CONTROL by going to START > CONTROL PANEL > SYSTEM > REMOTE SETTINGS (top left hand corner) and turn off ALLOW REMOTE ASSISTANCE CONNECTIONS TO THIS COMPUTER.

I also heard a similar story when we were staying in Worcester last week.

Durham Lumiere 2011

2 years ago Durham held its first Lumiere Festival which consisted of a number of stunning light installations. They are now about to hold another festival from 17th to 20th November from 6 until 11 every night in the centre of Durham. They are actually repeating the one where they projected images from the Lindisfarne Gospels onto the cathedral- probably the most spectacular of all of it. See link above. I have also attached some of my photos taken at the event. Well worth attending with camera and tripod.

Some started out life as jet workers, joiners or clock makers, a few trained as photographers, others developed their knowledge as amateurs to forge a new career. The book starts with the pioneer William Stonehouse and his photos, followed by others such as Wallis, Waller andDawson. New information has also been found on the most famous photographer of Whitby, Frank Sutcliffe, with new insights into his life and work, his travels abroad and a few of his letters, even the link between him and Beatrice Potter.For some photographers, such as Tom Watson and John Ross, this book expands in much detail on previous studies, but for most of Whitby's many photographers it is a journey of fresh discovery into their lives and work.

Whitby’s Photographers, their lives and their photographs from the 1840s, is by Ruth Wilcock, a local historian and amateur photographer, who has known Whitby since her childhood. The book is extensively illustrated with rarely seen pictures of the district and its people, many never published before.

Autumn heat now open - closing date 30 November 2011

Enter your autumnal photos in the Wetland Wildlife Trust's competition to be in with a chance of winning one of many great prizes.

This year's competition takes place over 12 months with four seasonal heats. During each season, we'll be looking for the best photos that represent that season.

At the end of each heat winners representing each of WWT's nine wetland centres will be chosen from each category.

When the competition closes on 31 August 2012 all regional heat winners will go through to the grand national final to be held in autumn 2012, and our Portfolio Photographer will be chosen and awarded the grand prize of a trip to Antarctica.

SPS at the PAGB Print Championships

On Saturday 22nd October Stokesley PS was one of the clubs representing the NCPF at the PAGB Print Championships.
The competition is in two parts. In round 1 all 36 clubs competed with 12 prints, each print being marked by three judges using the international scoring system of 1 to 5. Our highest scoring print was Paul Forster's 'Winter Trees' which scored 12 points. At the end of Round 1 SPS had a score of 125 putting us in 2nd to bottom place.
The top 8 clubs in Round 1 go on to compete for the Trophy while the remaining clubs compete for the 'Plate'. 5 prints are used for the Plate competition, two of which have to be monochrome.
Three of our prints managed to score 12 this time, Paul's 'Winter Trees', John L Davies' 'Saltburn Twilight' and Guy Davies' 'Cambridge Bicycle'. Our final score was 57 points putting us in 12th equal place. The highest placed clubs won the Plate competition with 63 points so we were only 6 points behind. This time we did improve and there were 10 clubs with lower scores.

A hundred wildlife photographs are on display at Kirkleatham Museum until November 20th. These showcase the best wildlife photographers in the world. This is a touring exhibition from the Natural History Museum in London.

In this year's honours list from PSA she is included with what is one of their highest accolades for service to photography, by making her a Fellow of the PSA (FPSA).

Jane was the first lady President of NCPF back in 1976 after working on their Executive for a number of years. Since then she has been a stalwart of the executive to this day. For two decades or more she served on the PAGB Executive eventually being made its President during the period that we at NCPF celebrated our Centenary.

She has also served for another 20 years or so as the Regional Organiser for the Northern Region of the RPS. However nothing can out do her commitment to the Northern Counties International Salon of Photography; the founding Chairman, she is still serving in that post as we come to the end of the 32nd such salon.

Ian Hulme FRPS EFIAP
Ian’s boundless enthusiasm for photography began at the age of nineteen and has never waned. He was a member of the Newcastle Society for many years and on retirement he moved across to the west and joined Grange club. His photographic interests are wide and varied and despite his enthusiasm for Nature photography his Fellowship panel was of church interiors. Ian is currently carrying out meticulous research into high end compact cameras with amazing results.

Paul Foley FRPS EFIAP MPAGB makes a very welcome return to the Region with his latest work. A dedicated landscape photographer he constantly seeks to express the beauty and tranquillity of the natural world. He gained a Fellowship in both colour prints and colour slides and he is currently a member of the RPS Visual Art Panel. Paul is an active member of Arena and since taking early retirement he has organised a very successful series of landscape workshops in both UK and abroad.

Priscilla Thomas FRPS MPAGB makes a very welcome return to the Region with her latest work. She may be small in stature but she is big in energy and imagination. Her Fellowship was achieved with a panel of prints in the genre of Abstract and this encouraged her to continue down this avenue of abstract and imaginative photography.
Priscilla has published a fascinating book, with forward by Sir George Pollock FRPS, which chronicles the development [and details the method] of her work from Impressionism to Constructivism. She has lectured extensively, exhibited at the RPS and taught workshops on “Exploring the Photographic Abstract”.
Priscilla is unique and her photography is original.

Laurie Ramsay: “Nature Trail”
Laurie – a regular provider of Natural History images for the Yorkshire Wild Life Trust – will show some of his excellent natural history sequences, which include narration, and he will give advice and tell the audience when, how, and where he gets such wonderful and unusual shots of his subjects.
He will be open to any questions the audience want to ask.

Eddie Spence FRPS DPAGB A-AFIAP
Eddie will show how he built one of his latest sequences in PTE 6, and how he used Audition to create the sound track for the sequence. Eddie will also show some of his award-winning sequences, and explain what inspired the making of them.
He will also talk a little about story-telling, which is a subject that he considers to be one of the most important elements in Audio Visual sequence production.

As always, this promises to be a super day, and should not be missed!

New Projector

Now that SPS has a new high resolution projector it is best to resize your images to 1400 x 1025 ppi for club competitions or any other time that your pictures are shown via the club laptop and projector. If you resize to 1024 x 768 ppi the projector will re-size, and interpolate, so your files may lose quality.

Those of you who were at the opening meeting last Thursday will have seen how good the new projector is.

At the end of last season Northallerton Camera Club announced and distributed information regarding a lecture to be given by Joe Cornish, supported by Steve Byard, at the Northallerton Forum. With the start of the new season I am expecting tickets to sell fairly rapidly so felt it might be useful to send out a reminder of the event. This is a new lecture by Joe with Steve Byard providing support around the technical aspects of capture and production, so it will be an interesting and enjoyable evening.

Photography Course at Saltburn

Profile Gallery in Saltburn is running a ten-week photography course starting on 6th October 2011.

The course will on on alternate Thursday evenings (7pm-8.30pm) and Saturday mornings (10.30am-midday). This arrangement is designed to provide opportunities for practical shooting sessions in the field followed by sessions back at base where participants can share and discuss their work with others.

The course will also provide input into basic photography theory (such as apertures, shutter speed etc) for those who require it. As such the course is suitable for both beginners and those who wish to develop their practice further by shooting in a supportive group situation.

You will be required to bring your own digital camera (any type from compact to full DDSLR is appropriate, or even a smartphone). You might also like to bring your own laptop if you have one but this is not essential.

The cost for the course will be in the region of £75-80 pounds.

We have been awarded an Arts Council grant for a project to record, through photographs of the people, places and events, life in Stokesley and surrounding villages during the course of 2011 and early 2012.
We would like everybody, members and non-members, to submit pictures, the best of which will be included in a book to be available for sale later in 2012. In addition there will be an exhibition, which will be held in various venues within the area.
Technical assistance and guidance will be provided by members of the Society at a number of “drop-in” open meetings.

As with Simon not many puffins but glad to have the terns as obliging, albeit one angry mum blessed me with a present all over my camera. The sailing ship was a bonus and may be a contender with our seascape theme - well you do have to think of these things!!!

Arts Council Funding

Great news for Stokesley Photographic Society; we have been successful in securing funding of £4280 from the Arts Council. This, together with the £500 obtained from North Yorkshire County Council last year, will enable us to update most of our equipment to ensure that we maintain our position as one of the foremost and progressive photographic clubs in the Northern region.
I would personally like to thank Carol Hudson for the tremendous amount of work she has put in on the various funding applications that we have been involved with over the last 12 months. Without Carol's efforts, and expertise in these matters, I doubt if we would have had such a positive outcome.
There is now much work to be done, because the funding is conditional upon us setting up a project to record, through photography, people and places within the Stokesley area, and to create a record for posterity. Members of the community will be encouraged to participate in the taking of photographs for the project, with assistance and guidance provided by our members, if required.
I will keep you all informed on the progress of the project once our committee has met to decide on the best way forward.

Durham's annual exhibition will be in the Galilee Chapel of Durham Cathedral from Saturday 9th to Sunday 24th July.
